The day I said goodbye

Never did I imagine,
this day would come,
But I knew,
I just knew
It was time to say goodbye,
On the last day of that July.
~
As I sat,
Tied to those machines,
I longed to be free,
and just be,
To breathe in the salty air,
And watch the sun dissolve into the sea,
Like the sugar cube that melts into my tea.
~
But I couldn't walk,
And I felt cheated,
The simple moment,
that one moment,
Was taken away by cruel fate,
That horrid winter day,
When that car shattered my spine,
And all the dreams that once were mine.
~
My sister saw my tears,
Brimming my sallow eyes,
She knew,
Just knew,
what she had to do,
And so we just left those desolate halls,
In the same car that broke my life,
She unshackled all the suppressed strife.
~
As we sat by the bay,
And watched the waves,
I smiled,
A tired smile,
At least the end was mine,
And as the sun slowly faded,
My heart soared with the wind, elated.
~
And now every time she sees,
the sun dissolve into the sea,
She thinks of me,
My spirit in the breeze,
In her soft brown eyes,
I will always be alive.

Love and loss are two of the hardest emotions to describe, yet they are also the most profound. They impact our lives in ways nothing else can. They can come in many forms, partners, siblings, friends, ideals. Yet each form holds a weight in our lives that is unmatched. This is my interpretation of both love and loss. I left it raw, simple and open to interpretation. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Oh my! This REALLY got to me. I cried! Because of course this happened to me, but through cancer, not a car crash. But before, I was fit, active, cycling, running, etc. But now I am blind, wheelchair bound and unable to do much for myself. I almost died one night, so know the feelings of dying, and saying goodbye. This is SO raw. But I have sat by the estuary of the River Humber where it goes out into the sea, listened to the waves, felt one with nature and the sunset, and tasted the salt taste in my mouth. Honestly, I am here to tell you that you got this JUST RIGHT.
